Acknowledgements

I would like on behalf of the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) and on my own behalf to give special thanks to the Department of Health and Welfare through Ms Ouma Kgori (Provincial Deputy Director, Human Resource Sub-Directorate, North West Province) and Mr William Vivian (District Manager, Odi Health and Welfare District) for allowing AMREF this noble opportunity to contribute to the process of capacity building and Baseline Study for the Winterveldt Sub-District.

I am honoured to be able to acknowledge with gratitude the contributions of Mr Simon Ntsimane (Staff Development Officer, Odi Health and Welfare District), Dr Steve Carpenter (Community Medical Doctor, Odi Welfare District) for their role in conceptualizing the study and providing necessary coordination and support to ensure its successful implementation. Special thanks to the dedicated team of interviewers (see appendix), supported by able group supervisors, who persevered the hardships of locating the households and interviewing household members to ensure quality data collection.

Allow me to pay a special tribute to the data processing team: Miss Eunice Mphelo and Mr Jimmy Pete and Mr Simon Ntsimane for their dedication, commitment and support throughout the data entry and analysis process.

This list would be incomplete without giving special thanks to all those households which were visited by the study team; to Mr Shadrack Dlamini (Honourable Mayor of Winterveldt), Councillors and other local leaders in Winterveldt and other stake holders, particularly those who were able to attend the feedback workshop. May I add to this list special thanks to the Sisters of Mercy in Winterveldt for their hospitality and care and for allowing us the use of their facility for training.

William Okedi
