Report on SAPLER Pioneers (peer sex-educators) in Odi District Jan-Jun 99 for NW Health Department (Fund for Aids Awareness NGOs).

Summary Report

Achievements

SAPLER has successfully managed to achieve its 6 months’ plan which mainly was to target schools in Garankuwa & Hebron. SAPLER’s ten pioneers and manager Edward Mabunda were distributed to 5 High schools & 6 Middle schools around Garankuwa & Hebron.

The past year (1998) our pioneers experienced problems with material; this has been dealt with successfully the past 6 months, condoms & charts were readily available from Odi District Health (Odi Hospital).

Posters, leaflets, AIDS Helpline stickers, condoms, t-shirts and caps and STD education material (forwarded to St Peter’s Mandlenkosi Family Health Company) were also obtained by Mr Mabunda from AIDS Action, Auckland Park and widely distributed in Odi District.

Problems

Most of our pioneers found it difficult settling down at the beginning of the year. According to pioneers’ reports, there is not a common syllabus being followed by all our pioneers. We will however try to draft a common syllabus for all pioneers, one for high schools and one for middle schools.

Plans

We intend in the last six months of the year to target schools around Winterveld & Mabopane. To start school health visits and promote external evaluation. To establish a programme for the re-visiting of old schools.

Failures

Sapler managers have not effectively monitored the work of its pioneers, partly due to widely distant schools and partly because Edward Mabunda was himself teaching part of the time at Botse-Botse High School. Mr Mabunda and deputy Lettie Dube intend to intensify our monitoring the during last six months of the year.

Personal Reports:

Edward Mabunda (Odi District Manager)

I attended Aids conference in Mmabatho called: Northwest Aids Youth Plenary Programme.

Venue: Uniwest – Chris Hani Centre

Unfortunately we arrived late due to transport problems. During the brainstorming session I personally brought up the issue of condoms and volunteers in schools. I was strongly supported by most of the youth delegated to the conference.

When I ask the programme director why the government does not allow condom distribution in school yards/premises, he was surprised. He said that circuit managers must ensure that school policy does allow condom distribution in the school premises.

He also agreed to our suggestion that of volunteers of youth from the community can be given basic training and can do the job. The suggestion was endorsed by Mrs. Lawren Force, who works at the Department of Health, Rustenburg District.
