Independent evaluation of the SAPLER peer counselling programme

Conclusion

Learners from both Sapler and other schools had a relatively good knowledge of safe sex issues, and largely constructive attitudes towards safe sex, with Sapler learners generally outscoring other learners.

However, although there is some evidence of linkage between attitudes and behaviour among Sapler learners, this remains a major area of concern. There are also some clear specific knowledge deficits that should be addressed and continually monitored.

Where Part 1 of this evaluation presented evidence of the programme’s impact on learners, Part 2 will address stakeholder perceptions (including the views of learners, educators and officials) regarding the current success and possible future directions of the programme.
