An illustration of the financial return of social investment in sexuality-education and reproductive health at a high school through reduction in teenage pregnancy
This table illustrates that an investment at a school of 1000 pupils, over a year of:
totaling R42 000, will save the state, if 30 pregnancies are prevented during that one year,
(It is not uncommon for a school to have 30 pregnancies in year)
If only one pregnancy is prevented, the investment will be recouped after 12 years.
A similar table can be made illustrating the cost of the loss of a young, trained worker to AIDS.
The table resembles those that corporations make to calculate returns on investment. Usually, they are happy to make an investment which shows a real return on investment of 15%. Because few NGOs do social costing, no one knows that government is passing up investments that provide returns of 100% and prevent widespread human suffering.
Don't be offended when human lives are measured against rands and cents.
Its the right thing to do.
