Community Health Development Coalition (N.West)

At last,  computer access for everyone

The coalition looks ready for take off - thanks to the bold support for the AIDS Council system by North West Province and in particular the Health Department, which is the sponsoring organisation.  The MEC for Health, Dr Sefularo, who currently chairs the Provincial Council on AIDS (PCA) is determined that the AIDS Councils  become a vital component of civil society,  independent of government.

The 18 Local AIDS Councils will soon each have an office, with two full time staffers with phones and computers.  Each local council will therefore be able to support its own projects and those of affiliated NGOs and CBOs.

The PCA has already declared support for making computer facilities and access to the Internet accessible to affiliated organisations through the LAC offices.  Negotiations are underway for the acquisition of refurbished computers with Internet access to be installed in LAC offices, separate from the officials' equipment, for use especially on the weekends, when internet access is cheap.

The Coalition advocates community empowerment - spreading skills, work opportunities, communication channels and opportunities to organise and access to resources among members of communities.

Members of the original coalition and organisations interested in reviving the coalition will shortly receive a newsletter about these developments. They will be invited to a general meeting to elect a committee to take forward this vision. NPOs and CBOs can register with the Coalition. Email us or contact us to make suggestions or comments.

Background to the Coalition

Organisations working in the North West Province in the community health field for the NWP Aids Awareness Fund for NGO's attended a workshop at Mafikeng in October 1998.

They agreed to form a coalition to advocate recognition and funding for the essential role that community workers should play in development and in the Campaign Against Aids.
